Thomas J. Buiteweg is a partner with the law firm of Hudson Cook LLP. His practice focuses on helping financial institutions, sales finance companies, motor vehicle dealers and manufacturers to establish and maintain automobile financing and leasing programs. He is a former member of the Ally Financial Legal Staff, where he provided legal support to Ally's motor vehicle financing, leasing, and insurance operations for nearly 17 years.
Buiteweg has served as a Uniform Law Commissioner ("ULC") for the State of Michigan since 2004. He is a former member of the ULC's Executive Committee. He is also currently a member of the ULC's Uniform Home Mortgage Foreclosure Procedures Drafting Committee. Buiteweg previously served as a member of the ULC/American Law Institute Joint Review Committee that drafted the 2010 amendments to Uniform Commercial Code Article 9, the Drafting Committee for the Uniform Manufactured Housing Act, the Drafting Committee for the Uniform Statutory Trust Entity Act, and the Drafting Committee for the Uniform Certificate of Title Act. Before becoming a commissioner, he served as a member of the Consumer Issues Task Force of the UCC Drafting Committee that drafted the 2001 revisions to Article 9.
Buiteweg is a former vice chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section's Consumer Financial Services Committee. He is also a former vice chair of the ABA Business Law Section's Uniform Commercial Code Committee. He is a member of the Governing Committee for the Conference on Consumer Finance Law, a member of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers, and a fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. He has been a frequent speaker at conferences on consumer-secured transactions and electronic installment sale and lease transactions and a guest lecturer at a number of law schools.
Buiteweg is a 1993 graduate, magna cum laude, of Michigan Law and a 1987 graduate, summa cum laude, of the University of Notre Dame, where he received a bachelor's of business administration. He is also a certified public accountant (license inactive).
