Broderick Johnson is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Bryan Cave. His practice areas include public policy and government affairs, and higher education. During his previous tenure at Bryan Cave, he led the firm's public policy and government affairs practice.
Johnson has had the distinction of serving under two U.S. presidents. Immediately before rejoining Bryan Cave, Johnson served as assistant to the president and cabinet secretary under President Barack Obama (acting as the president's primary liaison to members of the Cabinet). He also was appointed chair of the White House's My Brother's Keeper Task Force. In the Clinton White House, Johnson was deputy assistant for legislative affairs.
Johnson has served in numerous senior positions on Capitol Hill, beginning in the House Office of Legislative Counsel, where he drafted landmark legislation including the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. He also was chief Democratic counsel to two standing committees, including the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, where he crafted legislative policy and strategy on K–12, higher education, and labor and employment issues. His private sector career has included senior positions as vice president for congressional affairs with the AT&T and BellSouth corporations, where he helped lead strategy on technology and tax issues.
Dedicated to community service, Johnson serves as chairman of the board of the My Brother's Keeper Alliance (an outgrowth of the task force established by President Obama), and is on the board of the Wolf Trap Foundation. He also is an adjunct professor at his alma mater, the University of Michigan Law School. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross.
