Curtis, Yulanda

Clinical Fellow
Veterans Legal Clinic

3016 South Hall

Professor Yulanda Curtis joined the Veterans Legal Clinic in August 2015 as a clinical teaching fellow. She previously served as an associate counsel with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In that role, she researched and wrote decisions that determined eligibility for VA disability, education, and medical reimbursement benefits. She also has served on a temporary appointment as an attorney for the Social Security Administration (SSA), Office of Appellate Operations. At SSA she gained valuable insight into a similar federal disability program. As a result of the insights she gained at SSA, Professor Curtis presented ideas to senior VA officials regarding the need for improved consistency in employee training across the VA. Her recommendations to senior VA officials also allowed her to participate in a pilot initiative to develop a cadre of potential leaders to support the mission of the VA.

Since joining the Michigan Law faculty, Professor Curtis has presented at local and regional gatherings on topics ranging from discharge upgrades to adapting existing coursework and clinics to teach the pressing legal issues of our time. She was also the only non-veteran selected to participate on the Michigan Women Veterans Advisory Board (MWVAB). As a board member, she supports the MWVAB’s mission by expanding access to resources for Michigan's 47,000 women veterans. Her primary research interests relate to the expansion of disabilities associated with exposure to Agent Orange as well as the legal implications of service-related mental health issues. Professor Curtis received a bachelor of business administration, with distinction, from the University of Michigan and her JD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She is admitted to practice law in Michigan.
