Herrmann, Fred

​Fred K. Herrmann, '96, is a commercial litigator with a focus on competition law defense including antitrust class actions. He is a member of Kerr, Russell, and Weber PLC in Detroit and serves as the firm's co-general counsel. Michigan Lawyers Weekly recognized Professor Herrmann as a member of its 2018 Leaders in the Law class, and he was named Detroit's Antitrust Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America in 2014, 2017, and 2019. He repeatedly has been named a DBusiness magazine "Top Lawyer" and a "Michigan Super Lawyer" in Commercial Litigation.

Professor Herrmann is the president-elect of the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and for years chaired its pro bono committee. He is a member of the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, and twice chaired the State Bar of Michigan Antitrust, Franchising, and Trade Regulation Section.

Professor Herrmann is a former chair of the Representative Assembly, the final policymaking body of the State Bar of Michigan. He served on the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners from 2014 to 2017, where he was a member of the executive, finance, professional standards, public policy, and strategic planning committees. He is a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation.

Following graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988, Professor Herrmann served as a logistics officer in the Marine Corps, deploying overseas with Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, and later serving on the logistics staff of the First Marine Division. He had the privilege of commanding H&S Company, First Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, one of Detroit's own Marine Reserve units. Professor Herrmann is an active member of the Detroit Chapter of the Veterans' Bar Association.
