What should we do when one person wrongs another? There's an alphabet soup of options: apology, atonement, compensation, condemnation, forgiveness, repair, revenge, and retribution, among others. In this class, we'll explore the reasons for and against these sorts of responses to wrongdoing, and we'll try to figure out what role each ought to have in a legal system. The readings will mix philosophical reflections on the way we respond to wrongdoing with cases drawn from the law of remedies.
