Civil Rights Advocacy

Civil Rights Advocacy: From Montgomery to Stonewall to the Muslim Ban

The nation is currently engaged in a number of heated conversations about civil rights and social justice issues. These conversations include, but are not limited to, criminal justice reform, LGBT (particularly transgender) rights, and the ways in which we engage and/or protect religious minority communities (particularly the American Muslim community). This seminar will examine the ways in which civil rights lawyers engage in advocacy around these issues and how the lessons from previous civil rights struggles should inform current advocacy efforts. In particular, we will examine past ciivl rights "successes" (e..g, school desegregation efforts, the push for marriage equality) to determine whether they provide a blueprint -- or a cautionary tale -- for current civil rights struggles.
