Career Toolkit: Resources for Life

In these unsettled—and unsettling—times, it's helpful to be part of a community that offers valuable expertise. So we'd like to remind you that, as a graduate and lifetime member of the Michigan Law School community, you have access to the many resources of our Office of Career Services (OCS) and Office of Public Service (OPS). Both OCS and OPS offer a variety of employment tools online, as well as career counseling with six dedicated attorney-counselors between the two offices.

Career Advising
We offer individual appointments, during which we review the employment landscape, give advice on resume and cover letter presentation, provide preparation for interviews, tell you about more resources for finding employment, and provide any other information that may be helpful to you as you consider your career options. If you are contemplating a change of employer, job market, or even career path, you may call OPS or OCS to schedule an appointment (in person or via telephone) with one of our attorney-counselors.

To make an appointment, call OCS at 734.764.0546 or OPS at 734.647.3256.

Job E-mail Groups
For those of you interested in judicial clerkships, or public interest or government employment, we have e-mail groups that receive regular job postings and articles of interest. The lawgovjobs and pubservjobs e-mail groups are for those interested in job postings and information on opportunities in government and public interest law, respectively. The lawclerks e-mail group provides information on clerkship job postings, unexpectedly available clerkships, newly appointed judges in need of clerks, and articles of interest. To join, please click the e-mail group below and give your name and graduation date.

Job Bulletins
As part of the powerful Michigan alumni network, you have the opportunity to connect with other graduates if you know of an employment opportunity or are looking for one. By using the resources below, you can access listings for public interest, government, and private sector jobs, as well as fellowships. Or, you can post job openings for fellow alumni to view.

Jobnet
The OPS Jobnet provides listings for permanent public interest positions, fellowships, summer employment, and government legal jobs. Jobnet offers the ability to search jobs by type, practice area, and location, and there is the option to sign up for an RSS feed as well. You can submit job postings for inclusion on Jobnet by emailing OPS, or you can post them directly on the site.

Alumni Job Bulletin
With the Alumni Job Bulletin, you can access job listings through the links that follow, or through a newsletter, which is e-mailed every two weeks. If you would prefer to receive the newsletter, please call 734.764.0546, and we will be happy to add you to the recipient list. If you have a job you want to advertise to other alumni, you can submit it by faxing OCS at 734.764.5228 or e-mailing lawcareers@umich.edu. (These listings are provided because of their potential interest in the Michigan Law School community. Inclusion of a listing does not imply Law School endorsement of the particular program or opportunity described.)

Alumni Directory
The Michigan Law alumni network is more than 20,000 people strong and in every major legal market in the U.S.

Michigan Law's AlumNetwork Web site contains a wealth of helpful information, including information gathered for the printed directory. Alumni can search for fellow Michigan Law graduates by name, graduation year, work affiliation, or legal practice area. The directory also groups graduates by class year, geographic area, and/or specialty.

More Resources to Launch a Job Search
OCS and OPS have summarized some useful links as a launch pad for your job search. And this is only the start. We urge you to look in depth at both the OCS and OPS Web pages, and explore the Web sites of state, local, and specialty bar associations.
